Sarah
Lee is a member of the Charlotte Gem and Mineral Club and
has been teaching since the early 1990s. She teaches at William
Holland and at her home outside of Charlotte, NC. In her classes
you will learn triplets, doublets, Australian, and matrix
opals.
Carl
is into his 2nd year teaching opals having served an apprenticeship
under Sarah Lee Boyce. He has lectured on opals at several
gem and mineral clubs within the southeast and works out of
his home studio cutting and carving opals, jadeite, and other
sundry stones. Carl and wife Denise live near Murphy, North
Carolina; grow wine grapes, blueberries, and assorted fruit
trees; and raise honey bees. He retired from military service
(20 year USAF) in 1988, worked 10 years for M&M/Mars out
of their Chicago candy factory in the field of machinery reliability,
and then began a consulting practice in machinery health monitoring
working for the likes of Barrick Goldstrike and Enron Inc.
CLASS
DESCRIPTION
Sarah
Lee has been cutting opals since the early 1990s. She
teaches a structured 14-step method for cutting and polishing
various types of opal. For the first two days of class, opals
are cut from a kit provided by Sarah Lee. Students may bring
their own opal rough or the instructor will have many types
of opals, books, various supplies available for purchase.
The lab fee includes the opal kit, which contains 8 opals,
a doublet, and triplet. After completion of the 10-piece kit,
students will be able to cut all types of opals with her help
and guidance. Friday afternoons are reserved for evaluation
and critiquing of the opals cut during class. Instructor will
contact each student prior to class.
CLASS FEE - The $70 class
fee includes the opal kit, which contains 8 opals, a doublet,
and triplet. After completion of the 10-piece kit, students
will be able to cut all types of opals with her help and guidance.
Friday afternoons are reserved for evaluation and critiquing
of the opals cut during class. Total cost of class $40+
